Information about the VBL Pension Scheme

The VBL is an institution of the German federal and state governments and provides occupational pension schemes in addition to the statutory pension. PRwiss offers regular consultations with VBL advisers, and we are aware that there is a high demand for information about occupational pension schemes for the public sector in our area of representation. Therefore, in consultation with the VBL, we now make information for academic staff available here.
Academic staff at TU Dortmund University are often only employed on a temporary basis. This means that the compulsory insurance scheme VBLklassik often does not allow them to fulfil the waiting period required to receive a pension. You can therefore opt out of the compulsory insurance scheme – and your employer must then register you for additional pension provision in the VBLextra scheme instead. This insurance scheme allows you to claim pension benefits even if you have not completed the qualifying period, and you can continue to pay your own contributions after your employment has ended. However, the pension benefits are significantly lower than those offered by VBLklassik. In addition, employees must make a decision to switch no later than two months after the start of their employment. We therefore recommend seeking advice on the advantages and disadvantages of the VBL offers at the start of the employment relationship.
The VBL offers the following information in English for academic staff in the relevant tariff area:
- Brochure VBLspezial in English https://www.vbl.de/en/downloadcenter/-/document_library/6oDNANrPoVE8/view_file/133360
- Video in English: https://www.vbl.de/en/short-explained
We will continue to offer appointments in consultation with VBL and will always inform academic staff in good time by circular email. Please be in touch with the Staff Council if you have any further questions.
